What is Spatial Video

2024-01-18 05:29:35

What exactly constitutes a spatial video?

Although Apple refers to it as spatial video, it essentially refers to an immersive 3D video clip. Google had previously experimented with its own VR180 3D video platform for YouTube, which was VR-compatible, and even developed stereoscopic cameras for it. The workings of Apple’s spatial video platform are somewhat mysterious at this point.
Apple has not disclosed whether this spatial video format will be compatible elsewhere, and currently, it seems unlikely.

Is there a need to activate a special mode to record these videos?

While it’s unclear, there’s a likelihood that it might be necessary. The additional processing required for spatial video seems to leverage the power unique to the iPhone 15 Pro. In such a case, the concern arises about deciding the mode before committing to video recording. For instance, when capturing a spontaneous birthday moment, will one have to choose between a regular video or a spatial video potentially viewable only on another device? And if spatial is chosen, can it still be easily shared with others?

How large are the spatial video files, and is there a recording limit?

These questions are significant, as any limits on length affect what users may choose to shoot, and storage space is also a potential factor. Limiting the recording length could be a solution, and answers will likely be revealed soon.

How will spatial memories work with Apple’s other Memories?

Apple is already deeply involved in the memory business with features like Photos and the upcoming Journal app. There’s also a Memories section in the Photos app. Spatial videos offer a new immersive memory experience, but the question remains whether they will seamlessly integrate with Memories in Apple’s Photos app, providing automatically curated highlights.

Will this be the start of a significant change to Apple’s cameras?

Apple’s technology often trickles down from its Pro models, and spatial video capture is expected to eventually make its way across the iPhone line. This might necessitate lidar sensors in other phones, or perhaps not, as Google found a way to bypass this requirement.

Spatial video capture appears to be the least immediate impact among the iPhone 15 Pro improvements, but launching this feature now could be an early test, potentially followed by more detailed exploration in the future. Many questions remain unanswered, and we’ll have to wait until Apple launches its spatial video recording feature. Even then, a comprehensive understanding may only come when the Apple Vision Pro is launched on February 2nd.
